Kashmir conflict
April 28, 2008
At page 73 of the book “Bend it like Beckham” by Narinder Dhami the author refers with the dialog of Jessminder Bharma and her football-coach Joe to the Kashmir conflict. Jess and Joe talk about Jessminder’s problems (ll. 26-30).
“She called me Paki. But I guess you wouldn’t understand what that feels like, would you?”
Joe sighed. “I’m Irish, Jess. Of course I understand what that feels like.”
They talk about Jess being a Indian girl but getting called Paki. She is pissed of angry about it because Indians and Pakistani argue for more then 60 years over the Kashmir region between Pakistan and India. She is angry about getting called like that because the most indian’s and pakistani’s don’t like each other. She talks to Joe and thinks he wouldn’t understand her problem with getting called Paki – but he does. He is Irish and so he know’s how it feels having a problem with a territorial conflict.

“Bend it like Beckham” – I’ll sum it up!
April 8, 2008
Well, “Bend it like Beckham” is about a young girl called Jesminder ‘Jess’ Kaur Bhamra. She is a football-loving daughter of a Indian family in London. Unlike her, her mother doesn’t like football – call’s it even “football shootball” – she thinks it’s not good for a traditional Indian girl to like football. She has a older sister which is the more loved one. She is called “Pinky” and she is a traditional Indian girl, her mother wants Jess to be. Pinky is prepared to live a life full of cooking but Jessminder doesn’t want to live like that. She wants to be a professional football player just like her big Idol David Beckham.
